Sopwith and Hawker Aviation
Tommy Sopwith’s company made a third of all fighter aircraft supplied to the Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force, during the Great War.
In between the war years of the 1920s and 30s, Hawker Aircraft continued to supply the Royal Air Force with the Hawker Hart Bomber and the Hawker Fury Fighter. Sidney Camm designed a mono-plane fighter, based on the Fury, which was destined to be the Hawker Hurricane, which fought with great distinction during the Battle of Britain.
The Jet Age saw Hawkers designing iconic fighters for both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The Sea Hawk for the Royal Navy and the Hunter followed by the Harrier and finally the Hawk for the Royal Air Force
